Em 1122 o adolescente Afonso Henriques foi armado cavaleiro na catedral de Zamora. Desde cedo evidenciou notável carácter, corajoso e com extraordinária visão política.
Em 1139, D. Afonso Henriques consegue uma vitória estrondosa, ao vencer cinco reis mouros na batalha de Ourique.
A estátua em sua homenagem situa-se perto do castelo (foto) e foi esculpida por António Soares dos Reis em 1888.
