the big wall was a wall used for the protection of the city... like a castle wall that surrounded the old city ("a villa")
Guimaraes is a very old city with over 1000 years, and has an amazing heritage, such as this wall, the castle, the palace (which you can see part at the topo of this photo) and many other monuments :)
