Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira

É um mosteiro pré-românico situado no Largo da Oliveira, fundado por D. Mumadona em 949, e para protecção do qual se construiu um primeiro castelo de Guimarães; deu lugar, ao que tudo indica logo nos inícios do século XII, à Colegiada de Santa Maria de Guimarães, uma das mais importantes e ricas instituições religiosas portuguesas da Baixa Idade Média.

Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church

It's a pre-roman monastery situated in Oliveira's square, founded by countess Mumadona in 949, and for whose construction was built the first castle; from this monastery was founded the Colegiada de Santa Maria de Guimarães, one of the most important and richest religious institutions in Portugal in the middle age.

Praça de São Tiago

Segundo a tradição, uma imagem da Virgem Santa Maria foi trazida para Guimarães pelo apóstolo S. Tiago, e colocada num Templo pagão num largo que passou a chamar-se Praça de Santiago. Praça bastante antiga, referida ao longo do tempo em vários documentos, conserva ainda a traça medieval. Foi nas suas imediações que se instalaram os francos que vieram para Portugal em companhia do Conde D. Henrique. Aí estava situada uma pequena capela alpendrada do séc. XVII dedicada a Santiago que foi demolida em finais do séc. XIX.

St. Tiago Square

According to the tradition, an image of the Virgin Santa Maria was brought for Guimarães by the apostle S. Tiago. It was placed in a pagan Temple and that square that passed to be called Square of Santiago. It's quite an old square, referred along the time in several documents, it still conserves the medieval moth. It was in their environs that the francs (that came for Portugal in company of Conde D. Henrique) settle . There was a small chapel of the 17th century there, dedicated to S. Tiago, but it was demolished in ends of the 19th century.

Antigos Paços do Concelho e actual Museu de Arte Primitiva Moderna. Construção iniciada no reinado de D.João I Séc XIV, coroada de merlões, mas adulterada no séc. XVII com as sacadas do frontão clássico do piso nobre, assentes numa alpendrada de arcaria gótica.

Old city hall and actual museum. The construction started in reign od D. João I in the 14th century. It is crowned with merlons, but has been changed in the 17th century with the add of the balconies in the noble floor, established over gothic arches.

Conforme prometido ontem, hoje é a vez da Casa dos Laranjais.
Muito embora o seu aspecto actual resulte da campanha arquitectónica levada a cabo no decorrer do século XVIII, é evidente a integração de elementos provenientes de construções anteriores, bem como a persistência de determinados modelos, que contribuem para o carácter excepcional desta construção. Tal é o caso da torre, rematada por merlões e com uma gárgula no cunhal, que exibe uma lápide com a data de 1654, época em que terá sido levantada, seguindo o modelo da denominada casa-torre medieval, que foi "o primeiro tipo evoluído da residência nobre portuguesa" e que se manteve ao longo dos séculos, principalmente no norte do país.

As promised yesterday, today i present the House of Laranjais.
Although its actual look derives from the architectural style of the 18th century, is notorious the integration of some older elements that contribute to the exceptional character of this construction. That's the case of the tower, complemented with merlons and a gargoyle, that exhibits a stone with the date of 1654, time which the probably marked the house construction, following the model of the medieval house-tower, that was the first type of evolved residence for the nobles, and whose style persisted across the centuries, mainly in the north of the country.

O teleférico de Guimarães foi provavelmente o primeiro teleférico a entrar em funcionamento em todo o País, em 1994, e recebe visitas de todas as origens, seja de portugueses, como de estrangeiros, durante todo o ano. Faz o transporte entre a cidade de Guimarães e a Montanha da Penha, onde se situa um extraordinário local de culto em todo o Norte do País -Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Penha- dispondo esse espaço de parque de campismo, áreas de pic-nic restaurantes, hotel, bares, mini-golfe, circuitos de ciclo-cross e rotas pedonais que extasiam os milhares de visitantes anuais.
O teleférico tem a extensão de 1,7 km e leva-nos a uma altitude de 400 m, proporcionando uma viagem inesquecível entre a cidade e a montanha da Penha com a duração média de 10 minutos. Possui ainda cabines especiais para o transporte de bicicletas.

Guimarães' cable car was probably the first cable car in the whole Country, in 1994, and it receives visits from all origins; portuguese as well as foreigners, during the whole year. It makes the transport between Guimarães' city and the Mountain of Penha, where is located an extraordinary cult place in the whole North of the Country - Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Penha - disposing that space of camping park, areas of pic-nic restaurants, hotel, bars, mini-golf, circuits of cycle-cross and jogging tracks that amaze the thousands of annual visitors.
The cable car has the extension of 1,7 km and it takes us to an altitude of 400 m, providing an unforgettable trip between the city and the mountain of Penha with the medium duration of 10 minutes. It still possesses special cabins for the transport of bicycles.

O Museu de Alberto Sampaio é um museu estatal, dependente do Instituto Português de Museus.
Foi criado em 1928, para albergar o espólio de extintas instituições religiosas locais então na posse do Estado, tendo sido aberto ao público em 1931. Situa-se no Centro Histórico de Guimarães e está instalado em edifícios de valor histórico e artístico que pertenceram à Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, e que se desenvolvem em torno de um belíssimo claustro.
O programa museográfico actual data, no essencial, dos anos 60. Estão expostas valiosas colecções de arte antiga, em que avulta o legado dos séculos XIV, XV, e XVI, e cuja peça de maior significado histórico é o loudel do rei D. João I (séc. XIV). Um dos tratos mais caracterfsticos do Museu é a harmonia entre as peças e os espaços em que são apresentadas.
A escolha de Alberto Sampaio como patrono do Museu constituiu uma homenagem aquele historiador vimaranense, que se dedicou sobretudo à história regional (1841 - 1908).
O acervo do Museu de Alberto Sampaio é diversificado, mas coerente na sua diversidade e homogéneo na qualidade. É constituído pelas seguintes colecções: Ourivesaria, pintura, escultura, talha, têxteis, cerâmica, azulejaria.

Alberto Sampaio's Museum is a state museum, dependent of the Portuguese Institute of Museums.

It was created in 1928, to house the estate extinct local religious institutions then in the ownership of the State, having been open to the public in 1931. It's located in Guimarães' Historical Center and it is installed in buildings of historical and artistic value that belonged to Colegiada of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, and that were built around a beautiful garden.
The actual exibitions dates, in the essential, of the sixties. They are also exposed valuable collections of old art, from centuries XIV, XV, and XVI, and whose piece of larger meaning report is king's D. João I military outfit that he used in a famous battle (séc. XIV). One of the more interesting characteristics of the Museum is the harmony between the exposed pieces and the spaces in that they are presented.
Alberto Sampaio's choice as patron of the Museum constituted a tribute to that historian vimaranense (person born in Guimarães), that was devoted above all to the regional history (1841 - 1908).
The collection of Alberto Sampaio's Museum is diversified, but coherent in its diversity and similar in the quality. It is constituted by the following colecções: jewelries, paintings, sculptures, cuts, textile, ceramics and tiles.

Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques e área envolvente vistos da torre do Castelo.
Foi remodelado para o Euro 2004 e nele joga o meu clube do coração, o Vitória Sport Clube, mais conhecido por Vitória de Guimarães. Tem capacidade para 30000 lugares sentados.
O Vitória de Guimarães, embora tenha atravessado uma má fase da sua história o ano passado, bateu records sucessivos de assistências em jogos da Liga de Honra sendo que o máximo se registou no último jogo da época 2006/2007, o jogo da consagração pelo regresso ao escalão principal do futebol português, frente ao Olhanense com um total de 29810 espectadores.

It was remodeled for the Euro 2004 and it's the home stadium of my favorite club, Vitória Sport Clube, best known by Vitória de Guimarães. It has capacity for 30000 seating places.
Although the club has had a bad phase of its history last year, it beat successive records of attendances in games of the League of Honor (Second Division) and the maximum attendance in that league was in the last game of the season 2006/2007, the game of the consecration for the return to the main league of the Portuguese football, against Olhanense with a total of 29810 spectators.

Entrada do centro comercial triângulo. Dizia-se que seria um local moderno no centro da cidade, e pelo ambiente nos primeiros tempos tudo fazia pensar que se tratava realmente de um espaço de sucesso; porém com o passar dos anos este centro comercial caiu numa espécie de esquecimento e deterioração progressiva, encontrando-se actualmente um pouco degradado. Uma pena, pois para além de uma localização privilegiada, o triângulo tem também um estilo muito agradável e moderno.

Entrance of the triangle shopping center. It was said that would be a modern place downtown, and for the atmosphere in the first times everything made to think that if it would be indeed a successful space; however with passing of the years this shopping center fell in a type of forgetfulness and progressive deterioration, being nowadays a little degraded. A shame, because besides a privileged location, the triangle also has a very pleasant and modern style.

O painel de azulejos está colocado na fachada da Igreja do Carmo (primeira foto), situada no Largo do Carmo (também conhecido por Largo Martins Sarmento). Adjacente a esta encontra-se o belíssimo edifício do Antigo Convento do Carmo, que podemos ver em destaque na segunda foto.

The panel of tiles I posted yesterday is placed in the facade of Carmo's church (1st photo). This church raises in Carmo Square (also known as Martins Sarmento's Square). Adjacent to this church we have the beautiful building of the old Carmo convent, that can be seen in the second photo.

Câmara Municipal de Guimarães

Situa-se em pleno coração da cidade de Guimarães, a meio da Rua de Santa Maria, no edifício do antigo Convento de Santa Clara, fundado em meados do século XVI. O edifício tem uma fachada majestosa, bastante decorada e dividida em três corpos, tendo ao centro a figura da padroeira, num nicho, sobre o portal de entrada. No interior apresenta um claustro com um magnífico jardim.
A extinção das ordens religiosas em 1834 levou ao abandono do convento. Em 1891 foi instalado o seminário de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, a cuja inauguração esteve presente o rei D. Carlos sendo algum tempo depois o rés-do-chão adaptado a liceu e o 1º andar a internato municipal.
Desde 1975 que funciona nas suas instalações a Câmara Municipal de Guimarães.

City hall of Guimarães
It is located in the heart of Guimarães' city, to middle of Santa Maria's Street, in the building of Santa Clara's old Convent, founded in the middle of the century XVI. The building has a majestic facade, quite decorated and divided in three bodies; to the center the illustration of the patron, in a niche, on the entrance portal. In the interior it presents a monastery with a magnificent garden.
The extinction of the religious orders in 1834 led to the abandon of the convent. In 1891 the seminar of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira was there installed, the one whose inauguration was present king D. Carlos being later some time the ground floor adapted to school and the 1st floor to municipal boarding school.
Since 1975 that it works in their facilities Guimarães' City hall.

Para além da importante componente histórica que caracteriza esta cidade, Guimarães tem vindo a empreender trabalho na construção de equipamentos de desporto e lazer, com objectivo de contribuir para o aumento da qualidade de vida da sua população e para o seu desenvolvimento enquanto cidade de referência. De entre estes destaca-se a recém construída cidade desportiva de Guimarães, que integra em si as Piscinas de Guimarães (na foto), a Pista de Atletismo a Pista de Cicloturismo e o Pavilhão Multiusos (a serem postados futuramente).

Together with the important historical component that characterizes this city, Guimarães has been coming to undertake work in the construction of sport equipments and leisure, to increase the quality of life of the population and for general development as a reference city. Among these, it stands out the recently built sport city of Guimarães, that integrates the Guimarães' Swimming pools (in the picture), the Track of Athletics, the Track of Cycling and the Multiusos pavillion (they'll be posted hereafter).

O largo da Oliveira é, em conjunto com a vizinha Praça de Santiago, é um dos mais belos e agradáveis lugares do centro histórico de Guimarães (classificado como Património da Humanidade pela UNESCO). Situa-se defronte da Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira (mandada reedificar por D. João I, como forma de agradecimento pela vitória em Aljubarrota), ao lado do Museu de Alberto Sampaio e rodeado de casas medievais recentemente restauradas; é um espaço onde o olhar dos visitantes se perde no escuro do granito, no colorido das casas e na alegria das esplanadas. É lá que está também o Padrão do Salado, um alpendre gótico erguido em 1340 para comemorar a vitória contra os mouros, na batalha com o mesmo nome.

Oliveira's square
Oliveira's square is, together with Santiago's neighbor Square, one of the most beautiful and pleasant places of Guimarães' historical center (classified as World Heritage by UNESCO). It's located in face of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira (ordered to rebuild by D. João I, as form of gratitude for the victory in Aljubarrota battle), beside Alberto Sampaio's Museum and surrounded of medieval houses recently restored; it is a space where the visitors' glance gets lost in the darkness of the granite, in the color of the houses and in the happiness of the esplanades. It is there that it is also the Pattern of Salado, a Gothic porch raised in 1340 to commemorate the victory against the Moors, in the battle with the same name.

Rua de Santa Maria

Foi uma das primeiras ruas abertas em Guimarães, pois destinava-se a ser um elo de ligação entre o convento fundado pela condessa Mumadona, na parte baixa da vila, e o castelo situado na parte alta da vila. É já referenciada por este nome em documentos do século XII.

Presentemente esta rua de origem medieval liga a Praça da Oliveira ao Largo do Carmo e ao longo do seu percurso encontramos vários testemunhos arquitectónicos do seu passado: o Convento de Santa Clara, a Casa do Arco, a Casa dos Peixotos e a Casa Gótica dos Valadares; e tantos outros que lhe dão uma identidade própria e características especiais dentro da cidade de Guimarães.

It was one of the first streets in Guimarães since it served as the link between the monastery founded by countess Mumadona, which was located in the lower town, and the castle, situated in the upper town. There are references to this street in documents dating from the 12th century.
It presently links Oliveira Square to Carmo Square and during this path one can find various architectonic examples of the past: Santa Clara Monastery, The house of the arch, Peixoto's house and the Gothic house of Valadares; and many others that give it an unique identity and special characteristics in Guimarães.

Situada num ameno e formoso local, hoje conhecido por Largo da República do Brasil, levanta-se com notável elegância a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos, popularmente conhecida por Igreja de São Gualter.
Iniciada em 1769, a igreja de São Gualter foi provavelmente a última obra concebida por André Soares (1720-1769), o artista bracarense que, no Norte do país, levou mais longe as potencialidades do barroco e melhor interpretou as possibilidades e limites de um rococó de expressão católica, privilegiando uma maior depuração arquitectónica e decorativa, em detrimento do gosto rocaille que marcou outras obras suas.
Em termos arquitectónicos, a igreja é rectangular, com nave única de ângulos côncavos, e fachada principal ondulada e convexa.
As torres laterais são mais recuadas e foram erguidas na década de 1860 pelo arquitecto portuense Pedro Ferreira. Estas não estavam previstas nos desenhos de André Soares e, de acordo com algumas gravuras do século XIX o aspecto inicial da fachada da igreja era mais desafogado, fazendo sobressair a secção central e aumentando o efeito cénico de dinamismo, provocado pela ondulação do pano murário.
Estas torres pela sua notável altura e final pontiagudo, precisavam ser defendidas por um pára-raios, que sendo o primeiro que se usara em Guimarães, foi ali colocado em 1870.
É hoje uma das mais belas e completas igrejas da cidade, sede das celebrações religiosas das Festas Gualterianas.

Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos
Church of São Gualter
Located in a quiet and beautiful place, today known by Square of the Republic of Brazil, gets up with notable elegance the church of Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos, popularly known by Church of São Gualter.
Initiated in 1769, São Gualter's church was probably the last work conceived by André Soares (1720-1769), an artist that, in the North of the country, took far away the potentialities of the Baroque and best interpreted the possibilities and limits of a rococo of Catholic expression, privileging a larger architectural and ornamental depuration, in the detriment of the rocaille taste that marked his other works.
The church is rectangular, with only one chamber of concave angles, and wavy and convex main facade. The lateral towers are more retreated and they were raised in the decade of 1860 by the architect Pedro Ferreira. These were not foreseen in André Soares' drawings and, in agreement with some engravings of the century XIX the initial aspect of the facade of the church was more relieved, making a stand out the central section and increasing the dynamic effect provoked by the undulation of the walls.
Because of its notable height and sharp ending, these towers needed to be protected with a lightning-rod, that being the first that it had been used in Guimarães, it was placed there in 1870.
This church is today one of the most beautiful and complete of the city, main gathering place of Festas Gualterianas's religious celebrations.

Paço dos Duques de Bragança

Mandado construir no primeiro quarto do século XV, provavelmente entre 1420 e 1422, por D. Afonso, Conde de Barcelos - filho bastardo de D. João I e futuro Duque de Bragança -, a edificação do Paço coincidiu com a concretização do seu segundo casamento, altura em que fixou residência em Guimarães. O século XVI marcou o início do abandono progressivo e consequente ruína, processo que se agravou durante o século XIX, quando o Paço serviu de pedreira para as populações vizinhas. A partir de 1937 procedeu-se à reedificação arquitectónica, possível a partir da análise da estrutura e da reformulação de numerosos elementos, que lhe conferiram o carácter de Paço europeu que hoje detém.

Das colecções destaca-se, pelo seu valioso contributo para a História dos Descobrimentos Portugueses, o conjunto das quatro cópias das tapeçarias de Pastrana, cujo desenho é atribuído ao pintor Nuno Gonçalves, autor do políptico de S. Vicente de Fora, que narram alguns dos passos das conquistas do Norte de África; a colecção de porcelanas da Companhia das Índias; o conjunto de faianças portuguesas das principais fábricas da época: Prado, Viana, Rocha Soares, Rato; o núcleo de tapeçarias flamengas, nomeadamente as que foram executadas segundo cartões de Pieter Paul Rubens, entre muitas outras obras.

O Paço dos Duques está hoje classificado como Monumento Nacional (MN) e engloba na sua estrutura, para além de uma área de Museu, uma ala (fachada principal, 2° piso) destinada à Residência Oficial da Presidência da República.

Dukes of Bragança Palace
Dom Afonso, Count of Barcelos, an illegitimate son of King John I and the future Duke of Bragança built the Dukes of Bragança Palace in the first quarter of the 15th century, probably between 1420 and 1422. The construction of the Palace coincided with Dom Afonso's second marriage, when he made Guimarães his main residence. During the 16th century the Palace was gradually abandoned and left in a complete state of ruin, which was aggravated during the 19th century, when it served as a quarry to the neighbouring people. The architectural rebuilding of the Place started in 1937, made possible from the analysis of the main structure and the rearrangement of numerous elements that granted it the character of a European Palace which it holds today.
There are some particular collections that should be stressed due to their valuable contribution to the History of Discoveries, namely the set of the four replicas of the famous Pastrana tapestries whose drawing is ascribed to the painter Nuno Gonçalves, the author of the various panels of St. Vicent of Fora which narrate some steps of the conquests in the Northern Africa; the collection of Companhia das Índias (chinaware); the set of Portuguese earthenware from the leading companies at that time: Prado, Viana, Rocha Soares, Rato; the Flemish tapestries.
The Dukes of Bragança Palace is listed as a National Monument today and comprehends in its structure, besides a Museum area, a wing (the main façade, on the upper floor) now converted into the official residence of the President of the Republic.

#5 - the hospital at night

As raízes históricas do Hospital iniciam-se em finais do Século XVI, altura em que foi instituído o Hospital da Misericórdia de Guimarães. Funcionou neste formato até à Revolução de 1974, altura a partir da qual passou a ser designado de Hospital Distrital de Guimarães. Mas em meados dos anos 80, a capacidade do então Hospital estava bloqueada pelas exíguas instalações do Convento dos Capuchos (a postar futuramente), daí a necessidade de construção de um novo edifício para servir adequadamente a população da região. Assim começa a história das actuais instalações.

O início da execução do projecto data de 1978. Perspectivando um total de 485 camas e dotado de quase todas as valências hospitalares. A área do terreno onde viria a ser edificado, uma antiga quinta, estava dotada de cerca de 86 mil metros quadrados. Está localizado à entrada sul da cidade e foi dotado de dois edifícios, um corpo principal em altura com 11 pisos, tendo os dois primeiros pisos edifícios circundantes funcionando como uma espécie de base. O segundo corpo foi dotado de 3 pisos, ligado ao edifício principal por galeria semi-enterrada. Este ficou reservado para a Medicina Física e de Reabilitação e para parte das Consultas Externas.

A tradição religiosa da região ajudou a baptizar a instituição de “Hospital da Senhora da Oliveira - Guimarães”, não esquecendo a protecção da virgem milagrosa.

O novo Hospital entrou em funcionamento a 25 de Setembro de 1991, tendo sido inaugurado oficialmente a 8 de Fevereiro de 1992 pelo então Primeiro-ministro, Prof. Aníbal Cavaco Silva.

Hoje em dia o Hospital presta cuidados de saúde a uma área geográfica com uma população de cerca de 400 mil indivíduos. Realiza anualmente mais de 180 mil consultas, mais de 23 mil internamentos, mais de 10 mil cirurgias e mais de 100 mil atendimentos em serviço de urgência.
Desde 2003 passou a receber alunos de Medicina da Universidade do Minho e aguarda-se a sua classificação como Hospital Universitário.

The historical roots of the Hospital begin in ends of the 16th Century, time in which the Mercy's Hospital of Guimarães was instituted. It worked in that way until the Revolution of 1974, from which it began to be designated of Hospital Distrital of Guimarães (County Hospital). But in the middle of the 1980's the capacity of the Hospital was jeopardized by the small facilities of the Convent of Capuchos (photo to be posted in future post). The construction need of a new building to serve the population appropriately was evident, and so the history of the new facilities begin.
The first drafts of the execution of the project dates from 1978, aiming at a total of 485 beds and endowed with almost all of the medical specialties. The area of land where would come to be built was an old farm, with almost 86 thousand square meters. It's located at the south entrance of the city, and it's endowed with two buildings, a main body with 11 floors, and a second bulding with 3 floors, linked together by a semi-buried gallery. The seconde building was reserved for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and for part of the External Consultations.
The religious tradition of the area helped the baptism the institution as Senhora da Oliveira Hospital, not forgetting the protection of the miraculous virgin.
The new Hospital started functioning on September 25, 1991, having been inaugurated officially a bit latter, on February 8, 1992 by the Prime minister at that time, Prof. Aníbal Cavaco Silva.
Nowadays the Hospital renders healthcare to a geographical area with a population of about 400 thousand individuals. It accomplishes annually more than 180 thousand programmed consultations, more than 23 thousand admissions in the ward, more than 10 thousand surgeries and more than 100 thousand services in emergency room.
Since 2003 it started to receive students of Medicine of the Minho University and it awaits recognition as a Teaching Hospital.

É impossível separar a verdade da lenda na biografia de D. Afonso Henriques. Graças à sua esperteza política e coragem Portugal tornou-se a primeira nação europeia a estabelecer-se como Estado independente.

D. Afonso Henriques era filho do conde Henrique de Borgonha e de D. Teresa, bastarda do rei Afonso VI de Castela e Leão. Quando morre Afonso VI inicia-se uma disputa entre a mãe deste (D. Urraca, a herdeira legítima) e vários outros pretendentes ao trono.
Em 1122 o adolescente Afonso Henriques foi armado cavaleiro na catedral de Zamora. Desde cedo evidenciou notável carácter, corajoso e com extraordinária visão política.

Em 1128 luta contra a própria mãe e o aliado dela, o conde galego Fernão Peres de Trava, que queriam a anexação do Condado Portucalense pelo Reino de Castela. As tropas de D. Afonso Henriques e do conde enfrentaram-se no campo de São Mamede, junto ao castelo de Guimarães. O exército galego é derrotado e D. Teresa desiste de anexar o Condado Portucalense ao reino de Castela.

No dia 6 de abril de 1129 D. Afonso Henriques dita uma carta em que se proclama soberano das cidades portuguesas. Em 1135, Afonso VII, filho de D. Urraca, é coroado "imperador de toda a Espanha" na catedral de Leão, mas D. Afonso Henriques recusa-se a reconhecer o primo como Rei.
Em 1139, D. Afonso Henriques consegue uma vitória estrondosa, ao vencer cinco reis mouros na batalha de Ourique.

No ano seguinte auto proclamou-se Rei de Portugal e procura estabelecer a paz com o primo.

Mais tarde D. Afonso Henriques escreve ao papa Inocêncio II e declara que prestará obediência apenas a este, portanto, na região que governava mais nenhum poder seria maior que o do rei português. Em 1143 a soberania de Portugal é reconhecida no Tratado de Zamora e nos anos seguintes D. Afonso Henriques continua a conquista de territórios para Sul; em 1147 expulsa os mouros de Lisboa e de várias outras cidades lusas.

O testamento de D. Afonso Henriques, primeiro rei de Portugal prova que ele foi um verdadeiro estadista já que deixou sua imensa fortuna (que se confundia com o próprio Tesouro português) para o fortalecimento e desenvolvimento do país.

Em virtude das suas múltiplas conquistas, que ao longo de mais de quarenta anos mais que duplicaram o território que o seu pai lhe havia legado, foi cognominado O Conquistador; também é conhecido como O Fundador e O Grande.
A estátua em sua homenagem situa-se perto do castelo (foto) e foi esculpida por António Soares dos Reis em 1888.

D. Afonso Henriques, the Conqueror

It is impossible to separate the truth from the legend in the biography of D. Afonso Henriques. Thanks to his political smartness and courage, Portugal became the first European nation to establish itself as an independent and well defined State.
D. Afonso Henriques was the Count's Henrique of Burgundy and D. Teresa son. When Afonso VI died a dispute began among his mother (D. Urraca, the legitimate heiress) and several other candidates to the throne, including D. Teresa.
In 1122 the adolescent Afonso Henriques was armed knight at the cathedral of Zamora. Early he evidenced notable character, courage and an extraordinary political vision.
In 1128 he fought against his own mother and her ally, the Galician count Fernão Peres of Restraint, that wanted Condado Portucalense's [the territory from where the portuguese expansion begun] annexation in Kingdom of Castela (Spain). D. Afonso Henriques' troops faced the count’s army in the battle of São Mamede, in a large field near the Guimarães' castle. The Galician army was clearly defeated and D. Teresa gives up the idea of enclosing the Condado Portucalense to the Spanish kingdom.
In April 6 of 1129, D. Afonso Henriques writes a letter in that sovereign over the Portuguese cities is proclaimed. In 1135, Afonso VII, the other son of D. Urraca, is crowned "emperor of the whole Spain" in the cathedral of Lion, but D. Afonso Henriques refuses to recognize him as King.
In 1139, D. Afonso Henriques gets an outstanding victory in the field of battle, when we won against five Moorish kings in the battle of Ourique.
In the following year he self proclaimed King of Portugal and tries to establish peace with is cousin D. Afonso VII (king of the Castela kingdom – actual Spain)
Later D. Afonso Henriques writes to the pope Inocêncio II and declares that he will render obedience just to him, therefore, in the area that he governed, no power would be larger than the one of the Portuguese king. In 1143 the sovereignty of Portugal is officially recognized in the Treaty of Zamora and in the following years D. Afonso Henriques continues the conquest of territories at South; in 1147 it expels the Moors from Lisbon and from several other Portuguese cities.
The will of D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal proves that he was a true statesman since he left his immense personal fortune (that was equal or even greater than the Portuguese Treasury) for the invigoration and development of the recently formed country.
Due to his multiple conquests, that over more than forty years, more than duplicated the territory that his father had delegated him, he was nicknamed the Conqueror, although he is also known as the Founder and the Big.
His statue near the Castle (photo) was made by António Soares dos Reis (a well known Portuguese sculptor) in 1888.

Castelo de Guimarães
A sua construção inicial remonta ao tempo de Mumadona Dias, que o mandou edificar no século X, com o objectivo de defender dos ataques muçulmanos e normandos o mosteiro que tinha fundado para se recolher quando enviuvou.

Mais de um século depois, o Conde D. Henrique (a quem tinha sido doado o condado portucalense) escolhe Guimarães para estabelecer a sua corte. Talvez tenha pesado na sua decisão a segurança que o Castelo de S. Mamede (assim lhe tinha chamado a sua fundadora) oferecia. O forte, com mais de cem anos de vida, necessitava de reformas urgentes e o nobre optou por demolir o que restava da construção de Mumadona, ampliando com novos e mais potentes muros a área ocupada pela fortaleza do século X. Abriu ainda duas portas: a principal, a oeste, que vigiava o burgo, e a de leste, chamada da Traição.
No reinado de D. Dinis foi necessária uma nova reedificação, devido às lutas que travou com o seu filho, futuro rei D. Afonso IV. A última obra realizou-se ao tempo de D. João I que mandou construir as torres que flanqueiam as duas portas.
A partir do século XV, o Castelo de Guimarães deixa de intervir na defesa da população da vila. Para trás ficaram episódios bélicos, como foi o cerco de Guimarães, pelo ano de 1127, quando Afonso VII, rei de Leão, tentou exigir de D. Afonso Henriques vassalagem. Egas Moniz, aio deste último, vendo a vila em situação de desespero, garantiu ao rei a vassalagem do seu amo. O cerco foi levantado, mas o príncipe português não cumpriu o prometido pelo seu aio e este foi com a sua família até ao reino de Leão, de corda ao pescoço, oferecendo as suas vidas em resgate da palavra dada. Outros acontecimentos envolveram este Castelo desde o que se deu no histórico dia 24 de Junho de 1128, nas proximidades da fortaleza se defrontaram D. Afonso Henriques e sua mãe D. Teresa na Batalha de S. Mamede, tendo a vitória de D. Afonso Henriques dado início à Fundação de Portugal, até 1385 quando D. João I cercou e conquistou Guimarães com a colaboração dos seus moradores.
A partir do século XVI, foi instalada a cadeia no seu interior, e no século XVII funcionou como palheiro de Sua Majestade. O estado de ruína do Castelo aumentava cada dia.
Em 1836, um dos membros da Sociedade Patriótica Vimaranense (associação criada para promover os interesses locais) defendeu a demolição do Castelo e a utilização da sua pedra para ladrilhar as ruas de Guimarães, já que a fortaleza tinha sido usada como prisão política no tempo de D. Miguel. Tal proposta, felizmente, nunca foi aceite. 45 anos depois, a 19 de Março de 1881, o Diário do Governo classificou o Castelo de Guimarães como o único monumento histórico de primeira classe em todo o Minho.

Em 1910, foi declarado Monumento Nacional e em 1937 a Direcção Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais iniciou o grande restauro do Castelo, sendo concluído e inaugurado em 4 de Junho de 1940 por ocasião das Comemorações do VIII Centenário da Fundação da Nacionalidade.
Até hoje o Castelo de Guimarães aparece nos grandes acontecimentos como um ex-libris de Portugal.

Castle of Guimarães
The original construction of the Castle of Guimarães dates back to the time of Dona Mumadona Dias, who ordered its building in the 10th century to defend the Monastery (which she had founded to live there when she became a widow) from the attacks of Muslims and Normans.
More than a century later, Count Dom Henrique (to whom the Portuguese county had been granted) chose Guimarães to establish his court: maybe he took this decision due to the safety conditions given by the Castle of St. Mamede (name given by its founder). The Fortress, more than 100 years old, needed urgent reforms and the nobleman chose to throw down what remained from Mumadona's construction, extending the area of the 10th century Fortress with new and powerful walls. He still had two entrances opened: the main one on the west side, to watch the borough, and the east one, called the Traição (Betrayal) door.
During the reign of King Dinis a new rebuilding was required due to the fights he had with his son, the future King Afonso IV. The last works were done during the reign of King John I, who ordered the building of the towers that flank the two entrances.
The Castle of Guimarães stopped interfering in the defence of the town's population since the 15th century. Several warlike episodes remained behind, such as the Guimarães siege, around 1127, when Afonso VII, King of Leon, attempted to claim vassalage from Dom Afonso Henriques. Egas Moniz, his chamberlain, noticing the despairing situation of the town, assured his master's vassalage. The siege was raised, but the Portuguese Prince didn't keep the promise made by his chamberlain so the latter went with his family to the Kingdom of Leon, with a rope around their neck, to offer their lives as a ransom for the word given. Other incidents involved this Castle from the historic day July 24th, 1128, when Dom Afonso Henriques and his mother, Dona Teresa, fought in the Battle of St. Mamede, near the Fortress. The victory of Dom Afonso Henriques started the Foundation of Portugal, until 1385, when King John I besieged and conquered Guimarães with the help of its inhabitants.
A prison was settled in the interior of the Castle in the 16th century and during the 17th century it worked as His Majesty's haystack. The state of ruin of the Castle grew worse and worse.
In 1836, one of the members of the Sociedade Patriótica Vimaranense (Patriotic Society of Guimarães) - created to promote the local interests - defended the demolition of the Castle and the use of its stones to pave the streets of Guimarães as the fortress had been used as a political prison during the reign of King Michael. Such suggestion, fortunately, was never accepted. 45 years later, on March 19th, 1881, the Diário do Governo (Diary of the Govern) listed the Castle of Guimarães as the unique first class historic monument of the whole region of Minho.
In 1910 this Castle was declared as a National Monument and, in 1937, the DGEMN (General Service for National Buildings and Monuments) started its great restoration, concluded and inaugurated on June 4th, 1940, by the time of the Celebration of the 8th Centenary of the Foundation of the Nationality.
Until our days, the Castle of Guimarães appears as an ex-libris of Portugal on great events.
